Senate Property Tax Reform Bill Passes By Abbott, House Speaker Dade Phelan Refuses

The Meeting was called by Gov. Greg Abbott to discuss more about a special legislative session to address the property tax reform bill that was proposed in the Senate House.

Right after the meeting, Tuesday the Senate and House introduced and passed their own property tax bill. The Senate agrees with full bipartisan support The Senate Joint Resolution 1 and Senate Bill 1, Property Tax Relief, both sponsored by Sen. Paul Bettencourt.

After proposing the Senate Property Tax Reform Bill, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said that he is been fighting in order to increase the property tax since before he was elected in the office. He also added that the taxpayers in Texas deserve to receive the largest property tax cut in Texas history.

The House also passed their own bill called the HB1, it was filed by multiple sponsors. After the House passed it, Gov. Abbott released a statement that the Texas House is the only room that approves and passes the property tax cut bill. After the House also passed another legislative priority of Gov. Abbott’s on Tuesday in accordance with human smuggling. The first-ever special legislative session for 12 hours was ended by House Speaker Phelan.
