A 43-year-old woman was struck by a Toyota in Carle Place on Tuesday as she tried to cross the street.
Nassau County Police say she was seriously injured.
Detectives from the Nassau County’s Third Precinct detained the 73-year-old woman behind the wheel of a gray Toyota at the scene of the accident, which took place just before 9 a.m. Monday morning.
Police blocked off several lanes of Old Country Road. Yellow police tape was stretched around the Toyota for hours by the accident, which took place in front of the recently shuttered Chateau Briand Catering Hall and DSW’s parking lot.
According to police, the gravely injured woman was running south — across eight lanes of traffic — near the intersection of Old Country Road and Zeckendorf Boulevard when she was hit. The driver was trying to make a left turn onto Old Country Road, heading west, police say.
Witnesses could not say whether the pedestrian was knocked over by the SUV or tripped in the crosswalk and ended up under the vehicle, but police say she sustained serious head injuries.
A photo of the SUV, left in place where police found it when they arrived, depicts a pool of blood on the road behind the right front tire.
The SUV driver who remained at the scene was detained for questioning before undergoing tests at a local hospital, according to a person close to the investigation. The District Attorney’s Office has not disclosed what criminal charges, if any, are contemplated against the driver.
The female pedestrian has not been identified. Her prognosis remains uncertain.
