he Mayor of Topeka and city council will consider providing property tax claims next month to those property owners who meet the qualifications including having a total income of $37,750 or less.
Last Thursday, Spencer Duncan and Hannah Naeger who is Council policy and finance committee members voted 2-0 to advise the mayor and the council to approve the proposal about the property tax relief programs to the Topekans. Measure’s sponsor, Duncan said that the city staff members are still in the process of creating some ideas for the proposal and working out details.
This will finalize the version that will be placed on Topeka City’s website before the mayor and the city council will approve it. Councilwoman Christina Valdivia-Alcala is the policy and finance committee’s third member and she was not around during the presentation and the voting time. She began having Zoom meetings as she received a call that the voting has already been done. Duncan Property Tax proposal would enable owners to receive rebates from the property taxes they paid specifically by Topeka’s city government. Shawnee County Clerk’s office website says that the city currently has 38.393 mills they assessing.

Property Tax Claims For Topekans: Do You Qualify?
That amounts to $448.07 annually in city property taxes for the owner of about $100,000 home. Residents who pay city property taxes are eligible for this and also those eligible for a Homestead Refund from the State of Kansas. Also, to be eligible the property owner must have a total household income of $37,750 per year. You should also be, born before Jan. 1, 1967, have been blind or totally and permanently disabled or have a dependent child.
