A police officer was fatally shot during a struggle with an assault suspect in the woods in a Virginia mountain town, authorities said Saturday.

Friday, Mark Christopher Wagner II, A Wintergreen Police Department Officer was fatally shot and got killed during a struggle with an assault suspect in the woods in Virginia mountain towns.
According to Chief Dennis Russell said in a Facebook post, Wintergreen police received a report on a 23-year-old man attacking two other men at a home. When the police arrived, two men who were attacked immediately run away and they were already treated in the nearest hospital. The suspect also run away but Wagner found the assault suspect in the woods and they got into a struggle while arresting him because he has a gun. Mark Christopher Wagner II was shot during the arrest and died there.
According to Virginia State Police, the suspect is identified as Daniel Barmak, a 23-year-old from Towson, Maryland. He is now in the custody of the police and will be facing charges of capital murder and two two felony counts of malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the killing of Officer Mark Christopher Wagner II. He is now held in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

The Wintergreen police chief, Russel said that Wagner had been with them since August 2020, He previously served seven years with the Massanutten Police Department. He added that he is saddened by what happened because his been friends with him, Wagner is a hardworking person, he was very dedicated to work and is willing to work over time.
