Despite opinions from housing advocates, the new housing law in Illinois will allow immigrants without any documents to rent or buy a property.
What Is The New Housing Law in Illinois?
In August 2019, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a new housing law allowing undocumented immigrants to buy or rent a property from landlords. According to Sherer Law Offices, the new housing law will prevent landlords from refusing to buy or sell properties to immigrants.
Aside from that, the new housing law will also give immigrants the power to sue their landlords, who are using the tenant’s immigration status. Those who violate the law will be asked to pay up to $2,000.
The new housing law was established to protect immigrants and allow them to raise their issues with their landlords.
Pritzker was glad they were the first state in the Midwest to protect their immigrants by signing the new housing law.

Advocates Share Their Opinions Regarding The New Housing Law
Since Gov. Pritzker signed the new housing law to prevent landlords from refusing to transact with undocumented immigrants, some housing advocates are weighing in on the issue.
According to The Center Square, U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance said that housing costs will be badly affected by the immigrants because of the new housing law.
“Think about what this does for housing prices when you have to house 10 million people that shouldn’t be here, that drives up the costs of housing when interest rates are already through the roof,” said Vance, as quoted in the report.
For Michael Glasser of the Neighborhood Building Owner’s Alliance, the new housing law will not affect housing rent, as he explained how Illinois has been accepting immigrants from different countries.
