To address the issue on the cost of living in Boston, there is growing support for the reintroduction of rent control in Massachusetts.
According to a survey conducted by Zumper, the median cost of living in Boston for a two-bedroom apartment is $3,400, which reflects a 13% increase compared to the previous year. This makes Boston the 5th most expensive rental market in the United States.
State Representative Mike Connolly believes that the matter of the cost of living in Boston is in a state of emergency, and if not addressed, it could lead to a disaster.

Connolly suggests that restoring rent control is one potential solution to tackle the high cost of living in Boston.
Due to the issue of the high cost of living in Boston, Connolly made a proposal has been made to undo the ban on rent control from 1994 and give municipalities the ability to provide basic protections for tenants. The said proposal was submitted a ballot petition to the Attorney General’s office.
Doug Quattrochi, the Executive Director of Mass Landlords, an organization against rent control, argues that the rising cost of living in Boston is not caused by landlord greed but by market factors. Factors such as rising insurance, utilities, and repair costs are all contributing to the expensive nature of the cost of living in Boston.
