Springfield, the birthplace of the well-known children’s book author Dr. Seuss as well as Smith & Wesson, the nation’s largest handgun manufacturer, is a city of contrasts.
Unfortunately, because Springfield had the highest rate of violent crime in Massachusetts, that side of Springfield is more noticeable than the Smith & Wesson side.
Springfield had the sixth-highest murder rate in the state in 2020 with 18 reported murders. Over the year, Springfield residents had a 1 in 103 chance of becoming the victim of a violent crime. This has been the reason why Springfield suits of being on the “Most Dangerous Cities in Massachusetts” list.

North Adams, a 12,620-person city in western Massachusetts’s Berkshire County, is well-known for its tourism, culture, and leisure activities. It is, however, developing a reputation for being a dangerous location.
With 69 reported break-ins in 2020, North Adams had the second-highest rate of burglaries in the state. North Adams has the 16th highest rate of rape cases in the state even though violent crime is generally low there.
