China and North Korea as one Against Pacific

A new threat arises because of China and North Korea activities in the Pacific. The neighboring countries increasingly turn to the U.S. Military to help counter this new threat.

A top Army General told NatSec Daily about a threat that rises on the neighboring country against China and North Korea. The Pacific nations are now in full participation in military drills by the U.S. and and other regions. Gen. Charles Flynn, a commander of U.S. Army Forces in the Pacific is concerned about Pyongyang’s stepped-up missile testing and Beijing’s military buildup.

In a report by POLITICO, Flynn described the differences in the military buildup since his first time serving in the position. He can see the difference between China and North Korea over the last two years. He compared the environment when he commanded the 25th Infantry Division based at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii and there was a big change.

Flynn said that because of the threat growing from China and North Korea, he saw a different unity and collective commitment in the different regions. He also saw the difference in the participation during the Army’s Annual Super Garuda Shield exercise in Indonesia, where it increased from 2 to 14 nations in 2021 and 2022 and this year, there were 19 nations participating. Also, during the Annual Talisman Sabre in Australia, there were two to 23 nations this year with 30,000 soldiers participating.

In another report published by Time Magazine, Flynn said that because of the threat growing from China and North Korea, he saw a different unity and collective commitment in the different regions. He also saw the difference in the participation during the Army’s Annual Super Garuda Shield exercise in Indonesia, where it increased from 2 to 14 nations in 2021 and 2022 and this year, there were 19 nations participating. Also, during the Annual Talisman Sabre in Australia, there were two to 23 nations this year with 30,000 soldiers participating.

On the Command’s Annual Army Chiefs at the end of the month in New Delhi, India, Flynn expected 36 countries to be present including the 20 Army Chiefs.

Flynn observed a pattern that was evident at Camp David’s inaugural trilateral summit involving the United States, Japan, and South Korea last month. There, the three nations agreed to start exchanging real-time intelligence on North Korean missile launches and to organize yearly military drills in response to China’s “dangerous and aggressive behavior” in the South China Sea.

The countries in the different regions were threatened by China and North Korea which strengthened their unity and collective commitment. They observed that China and North Korea are acting irresponsibly and overly aggressively.
