An attempted carjacking in New Brunswick turned violent when two men assaulted a driver who tried to stop them from stealing his car.

The attempted carjacking incident occurred at the intersection of High and Hamilton streets, near Rutgers University campus.

The attempted carjacking victim is not affiliated with the university, but students were shocked by the attempted carjacking incident.

Similar car thefts have occurred on and off campus in the past. The assault occurred around 8:40 p.m., when the attempted carjacking suspects got into the car with the intention of stealing it.

The driver attempted to remove them from the vehicle, but one of the attempted carjacking suspects struck him with a closed fist before they both fled the scene.

The attempted carjacking driver received treatment for his injuries.

In a report by New Jersey 101.5, according to the Rutgers University police, the two suspects were wearing ski masks when the attempted carjacking incident happened.

In 2023, New Brunswick police recorded 76 robberies, 65 aggravated assaults, and 238 simple assaults. However, it is not clear from the provided information whether any of these incidents were carjackings.

Rutgers police are seeking information about the attempted carjacking incident and urging anyone with details or who was in the area to contact them, New Jersey 101.5 added.
