Improvement of Virginia’s prisons will be talked about in a hearing at the Greater Richmond Convention Center next month.
Greater Richmond Convention Center’s All-Day Hearing
An all-day hearing about injustices will be held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, Virginia Prison Justice Network, and The Virginia Defenders For Freedom, Justice & Equality are co-sponsoring the said event. This all-day hearing will take place on the seventh of next month, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
Testimonies about injustices in the state’s prisons, jails, and immigrant detention centers will be presented by prisoners, formerly incarcerated individuals, family members, and advocates will be talked about at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. A panel of judges from various fields will hear the testimonies stated at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
Following the Tribunal at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, a report will be published and given to every candidate running in the 2023 Virginia General Assembly election. Every candidate will be asked to take a position on the proposal made through the hearing at the Greater Richmond Convention Center to establish an Independent Outside Oversight Body to supervise all confinement facilities in the state.
According to a published article by Mundo Obrero Workers World, the aim of the hearing at the Greater Richmond Convention Center is to make Prison Justice a crucial issue in the upcoming election.
Supporters of the hearing that will be held at Greater Richmond Convention Center can show their support by indicating their attendance on the Facebook page, inviting others to attend, endorsing the Tribunal if representing an organization, and spreading the word through social media.

Lack Of Democracy And Disproportionate Imprisonment
In a published article by Richmond Times-Dispatch, the lack of democracy in prisons and the disproportionate imprisonment of individuals, despite Virginia’s reputation for rehabilitation. The elimination of discretionary parole in the 1990s has contributed to low parole rates and a stagnant criminal justice system.
