A new ruling may happen soon as the Maryland Supreme Court is having reconsideration of the Hae Min Lee case.
The Hae Min Lee Case
The Maryland Supreme Court heard arguments regarding the Hae Min Lee case with the suspect being Adnan Syed. Syed’s conviction due to the Hae Min Lee case was vacated last year, but it was reinstated in March due to a lack of proper notice to Lee’s family for the hearing.
The court is now considering whether the family’s rights were violated and whether there should be a new hearing for the Hae Min Lee case. The lawyer of the suspect in the Hae Min Lee case argues that his freedom is at stake, while Lee’s family’s lawyers believe it is an important day for victims’ rights.
While there is evidence pointing to other suspects in the Hae Min Lee case and Syed was released from prison last October, there is a possibility that he may have to go back if the court rules differently according to a published article by NBC News.
“Serial Podcast”
In a published article by WTOP, the Hae Min Lee case gained national attention through the popular podcast “Serial.” The court is addressing the issue of the extent to which crime victims in Maryland can participate in hearings where a conviction could be vacated.
They are also considering whether to uphold a lower court ruling that reinstated Syed’s 2000 murder conviction. The court’s decision will determine whether he may potentially be sent back to prison for life.
