Efforts to Promote Tax Fairness on International Day of the Girl

According to scrippsnews.com, On International Day of the Girl, a coalition called “The Tampon Tax Back Coalition” was introduced, aiming to provide consumers with reimbursement for the sales tax they pay on feminine hygiene products. Despite calls to exempt these products from taxes, sales tax on items such as tampons, pads, and menstrual cups still exists in 21 states.

Advocates argue that these essential products should not be subject to taxation, especially on International Day of the Girl when items like Rogaine and Viagra, designed for men, are considered medical necessities. Consumers can now seek tax refunds if they purchase products from eight participating brands: August, Cora, Lola, The Honey Pot, Rael, Here We Flo, Saalt, and DIVA on International Day of the Girl.

To claim a refund, individuals need to visit www.tampontaxback.com on International Day of the Girl and sign up with their phone number. After receiving a text confirmation on International Day of the Girl, they can submit a photo of their receipt for eligible items bought within ten days.

Financial Relief and Fair Taxation on International Day of the Girl

The coalition on International Day of the Girl will then calculate the tax paid based on the state of purchase and send the amount back through Venmo or PayPal within 24 hours. According to U.S. News and World Report, the average woman spends around $20 on feminine hygiene products each cycle, accumulating to approximately $18,000 over a lifetime.

In states like Alabama, where the standard tax rate is 11.5%, this could mean that the average woman spends over $2 per month in sales taxes on menstrual products on International Day of the Girl. The launch of this coalition on International Day of the Girl aims to alleviate this financial burden and promote fairness in taxation for essential feminine hygiene products.
