Former K-pop Star Kris Wu’s Appeal Denied: 13-Year Sentence on Rape Charges Upheld
International Attention as Kris Wu’s Appeal on Rape Charges Rejected: 13-Year Sentence Stands
According to source, Canadian-Chinese former K-pop star Kris Wu’s appeal for a 13-year sentence on rape charges has been rejected by a Beijing court. Accused of a series of attacks on women in 2021, Wu, a former member of K-pop group EXO, faced allegations of date rape by an 18-year-old college student, who later revealed similar incidents with other women, some allegedly underage.
Despite denying the rape charges, Wu received a 13-year sentence last November, consisting of 11.5 years for rape and 22 months for “group lewdness.” The Beijing No. 3 Intermediate People’s Court affirmed the decision, stating Wu violated the will of women.
The court’s rejection of Kris Wu’s appeal follows the denial of Canadian diplomats’ access to his July appeal hearing. Wu’s case has drawn international attention, given his prominence in China’s entertainment industry.

Landmark Ruling in Kris Wu Case: Court’s Decision on Rape Charges Reinforces Commitment to Addressing Sexual Assault Issues
The Chaoyang District People’s Court initially sentenced him based on accusations that he exploited the drunkenness of multiple victims for sexual relations, constituting the crime of rape. The severity of the rape charges reflects growing scrutiny of high-profile individuals and underscores China’s commitment to addressing sexual assault issues.
Wu’s case has broader implications for the #MeToo movement in China, as the rape charges against him led to increased awareness of sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry. The rejection of his appeal sends a signal about the country’s stance on such issues, emphasizing accountability even for influential figures. Despite Wu’s denial of the rape charges, the court’s decision reinforces the importance of addressing sexual assault allegations seriously, irrespective of the accused’s celebrity status.
