Cleveland Metropolitan School District Shuts Down During Snowstorm Chaos
According to source, an early winter storm brought disruptive conditions to the northeastern United States, closing schools in Cleveland Metropolitan School District and triggering lake-effect snow warnings in Pennsylvania and New York. The severe weather made travel hazardous on Interstate 90 in northern Ohio, leading to a 10-vehicle crash near Buffalo, New York, with a 12-year-old boy seriously injured.
The National Weather Service issued warnings of up to 16 inches of snow in the greater Cleveland Metropolitan School District area and significant accumulations in Erie, Pennsylvania. Near-whiteout conditions and strong winds further complicated the situation, prompting Cleveland Metropolitan School District closures and travel advisories. In response to the winter storm, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, serving over 36,000 students, closed all its schools, and neighboring districts in Ohio and Pennsylvania also took precautions.
The Ohio Department of Transportation deployed nearly 340 crews, particularly in northeast Ohio, to address the impact on roads and highways. Reduced speed limits on Interstate 90 aimed to enhance safety during the snowfall, and cleanup crews anticipated extended shifts to handle potential issues caused by snow drifts resulting from high winds.

Upstate New York experienced over a foot of snow affecting a rural stretch east of Lake Ontario with one area recording 23 inches by Tuesday morning. The Tug Hill region, known for intense lake-effect snowstorms, faced Cleveland Metropolitan School District closings and travel advisories. South of Buffalo, towards the Pennsylvania border additional snowfall disrupted the morning commute, leading to car incidents and Cleveland Metropolitan School District closures. Law enforcement reported several vehicles off the roads, and additional snowfall was expected in Buffalo suburbs and neighboring counties through early Wednesday.
The winter storm highlighted the region’s vulnerability to early snowfall emphasizing the importance of proactive measures and precautions to ensure public safety and manage the impacts on transportation and education systems.
