A West Virginia coalition supporting anti-abortion pregnancy centers is set to receive $1 million in taxpayer dollars.
Program Details and Opposition Dynamics
In a recent report published by US News, in December 01, 2023, the West Virginia Pregnancy Center Coalition has been entrusted with managing the newly established West Virginia Mothers and Babies Support Program for anti-abortion pregnancy. This initiative, authorized by the GOP-dominated state Legislature and Governor Jim Justice, aims to provide support to pregnant women and families in the aftermath of the state’s near-total abortion ban. The funding is earmarked for organizations dedicated to encouraging alternatives to abortion, aligning with the state’s stance on protecting the unborn.
Under the West Virginia Mothers and Babies Support Program, resources will be directed towards medical care, parenting and life-skills education, financial assistance, and baby supplies. However, the grants are exclusively available for anti-abortion pregnancy centers, maternity homes, adoption agencies, and life-affirming social service organizations.
The law governing the program expressly prohibits funding for entities associated with anti-abortion pregnancy advocacy. This development reflects a broader trend in predominantly red states where significant financial allocations are being made to organizations discouraging abortion, especially in the wake of the Supreme Court’s shift on constitutional protections in 2022.

Role of Anti-Abortion Centers and Program Oversight
According to the report published by ABC News, anti-abortion pregnancy centers, often religiously affiliated, are not licensed medical facilities and do not offer medical services like pre- or post-natal care. Unlike abortion clinics, they operate without stringent government regulations. The West Virginia Pregnancy Center Coalition, as the program’s management agency, assumes the responsibility of establishing qualification requirements for receiving funds.
Organizations seeking funding must be nonprofits, providing training and annual evaluations for their staff, maintaining child abuse reporting policies, and handling medical emergencies and client complaints. This anti-abortion pregnancy move signifies a proactive approach by the state to support alternatives to anti-abortion pregnancy, aligning with the changing landscape of reproductive rights in the United States.
