In a recent crime report published by Fox News, in December 02, 2023, the rock star surgeon and his experimental trachea transplants, however, led to the deaths of at least eight patients who underwent the untested procedure. The controversy surrounding the rock star surgeon, Macchiarini’s alleged deceit and the tragic outcomes of his surgeries are vividly depicted in a new Netflix docuseries, “Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife,” directed by Emmy-nominated Ben Steele and narrated by Macchiarini’s former fiancée and NBC News producer, Benita Alexander.
Despite the rock star surgeon, Macchiarini’s initial acclaim, the global impact of his procedures spread to countries such as Spain, Russia, Iceland, Britain, and the United States, where patients received his synthetic windpipes. The Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, where Macchiarini once taught and conducted research, uncovered a web of lies and research misconduct.

In 2022, a Swedish appeals court charged him with aggravated assault and bodily harm against three patients.
