Economic and Emotional Toll: Impact of Violent Crime on Oakland Businesses

There has been a rise in violent crime and theft in Oakland, California, which has forced residents and companies to take drastic steps according to news report. Smash-and-grab thefts and reports of assaults are on the rise, which is why East Bay Glass, a local business, has seen a big rise in calls for bulletproof glass. Joshua Pratchard, the general manager, said that the demand for this special kind of glass has grown a lot, with a focus on its thickness, which ranges from 3/8th of an inch to 2.5 inches.

Bulletproof glass sales have skyrocketed due to the demand for security. A mother of two was killed by stray gunshots in her home, highlighting the sad scenario. Oakland’s communities have been shaken by several heartbreaking events, prompting calls for increased safety.

Statistics show a sharp rise in violent crime. Oakland police report a 21% increase in violent crime from 2022 to 2023. Residents want city, county, state, and federal governments to take comprehensive public safety measures.

The economic and emotional toll is clear. Sarah Ryan of Mexican eatery Calavera expressed concerns, comparing the mood to a pandemic. Businesses are suffering from decreasing foot traffic and the prospect of closure.

Implementing such security measures is costly. Joshua Pratchard noted the financial expenditure, as bulletproof glass costs $100–350 per square foot, without installation. This rise in violent crime has increased the demand for safety measures, but it has also caused a sense of loss as law and order crumble.

The fact that residents are seeking more security in their daily lives emphasizes the gravity of the situation. Oakland’s problems are highlighted by local companies installing bulletproof glass. Comprehensive safety actions are needed more than ever as the community navigates these difficult times.
