Nikki Haley, a former Republican presidential candidate, and Chris Sununu, the governor of New Hampshire, went on ABC’s “This Week” to discuss Haley’s plans for the state.
Nikki Haley and the Call for Substantive Discourse
But when Jonathan Karl of ABC News asked Haley about Trump’s campaign theme of “retribution,” she pushed back and said she didn’t like how the media always focused on the previous president. She said that the media’s fixation on Trump was “exhausting” and stressed that regular people care more about things like keeping their freedoms and being able to afford things.
Karl answered his question by saying that Trump is the primary opponent Haley is running against. Sununu added his voice, slamming Trump for avoiding discussing problems and saying he doesn’t keep his promises, like protecting the southern border and being responsible with money.
Haley told Karl to ask Trump about participating in the Iowa and New Hampshire debates. She did this to stress the importance of focusing on real issues instead of Trump’s bluster.

Haley and Sununu Call for a Shift in Republican Leadership
The conversation shows how tense things are between Haley and the reporters who keep asking her about Trump. Even though studies show that Trump is popular, Haley and Sununu stressed the need for a new breed of leaders who would focus on solving people’s problems instead of making the media focus on what Trump says. The conversation talked about economic responsibility, border security, and “draining the swamp,” which shows how important it is to talk about actual policy problems.
Sununu backed Haley for the 2024 GOP primary at the town hall in New Hampshire and praised her work in the state. Haley has been making progress in the New Hampshire polls but is still far behind Trump, with only 29% of the vote.
The interview showed the difference between people wanting to move on from Trump’s impact and those thinking he is still critical in Republican politics.
