Property owners in Cook County will be receiving their refunds from overpaid installment taxes last year.

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas distributes over $30.5 million in automatic refunds amounting to 9,000. These refunds will be received by property owners who overpaid their first installment taxes last year.
The refunds will be received by property owners who have tax exemptions such as homeowners, Senior Citizens, Senior Freeze, and Disabled Persons.
The refunds will be given to property owners through electronic deposits or mailed refund checks, and property owners who paid their taxes online will receive $13.1 million electronically deposited to their bank accounts.
According to a published article by WGN, Pappas stated that this service is a convenient way for property owners to receive their money without filing applications or dealing with paperwork. The refunds that will be given to property owners will be deposited over the next three months.

Since 2018, Pappas has refunded around $121.2 million to over 155,015 property owners without requiring applications. Property taxes are due in two annual installments, and taxpayers receiving automatic refunds paid First Installment amounts exceeding the total due for the year.
