A court-ordered redo of Connecticut’s Democratic primary may oust Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim, with evidence of ballot harvesting prompting concerns. Ganim’s reelection in November stands contested due to “shocking” evidence of voting irregularities, compelling the necessity of a primary redo.
Court-Ordered Redo
The court ruling cited compelling evidence of a Ganim supporter allegedly depositing stacks of absentee ballots into a drop box. These actions, considered ballot harvesting, violated state laws. This discovery prompted the court to order a redo of the Democratic primary held in September.
Ganim acknowledged the irregularities linked to his campaign but urged his opponent, John Gomes, to acknowledge similar misconduct by his supporters in the primary.
Notably rare, the election redo is one of three occurrences this year or upcoming involving redo elections in Wisconsin and Louisiana due to voting irregularities. Connecticut’s Democratic primary redo is scheduled for Jan. 23, 2023, following Ganim’s narrow win by 251 votes.

Unprecedented Election Redos
Wisconsin and Louisiana also witnessed redo elections due to irregularities, emphasizing the rarity of such occurrences. These redos, alongside Bridgeport’s situation, spotlight growing concerns over voting integrity in recent local elections.
These situations indicate a renewed focus on the necessity of stringent electoral oversight, considering irregularities that impact the outcome of crucial local elections.
