Surprising Crime Facts in South Carolina

South Carolina, known for its warmth and hospitality, belies a darker reality: it is the sixth most deadly state in the United States. To throw light on the problem, RoadSnacks has developed a list of the “10 Most Dangerous Cities in South Carolina for 2023,” based on data from 53 communities with populations of more than 5,000. The list takes into account both violent and property crime rates from the FBI’s most recent report. Substance misuse, economic hardships, and complicated societal issues all lead to high crime rates that outnumber the national average and are on the rise.

Orangeburg, called “The Garden City,” tops the list despite having the state’s highest violent crime rate. Darlington, famed for its tobacco plantations and NASCAR racing, comes in second, with an increase in property crime. Florence and Spartanburg are also extensively featured, each dealing with their own set of crime issues. Myrtle Beach, a popular tourist location, ranks fifth in terms of overall crime rate, highlighting worries about property crimes.

Greenwood, known for hosting festivals, takes the 6th spot with the sixth-highest violent crime rate and 14th-highest property crime rate. Georgetown, the third oldest city in South Carolina, ranks 7th among the most dangerous cities, marked by picturesque charm but troubled by 407 thefts in 2020. Hartsville, holding the 8th position, maintains a steady crime rate with the 13th-highest violent crime rate despite recording no murders in 2020. Marion, positioned at 9th place, grapples with a significant crime problem, due to high rates of burglaries and robberies, despite its small-town charm and historical significance. West Columbia rounds up the list at 10th place, with an elevated property crime rate, emphasizing the diverse and pervasive nature of crime challenges across South Carolina’s cities.
