Rafael Govea Romero, 23, is detained by ICE for capital murder. Lizbeth’s mother, Jacqueline Medina, called for justice and better legislation to prevent future events, saying Romero shouldn’t have been in the nation if processes were followed.
Jacqueline found her daughter dead in the bathtub when she got home. According to a police affidavit, Edna High School cheerleader Lizbeth was murdered and cleaned after several stab wounds. Romero, an “undocumented male,” was linked to Lizbeth’s apartment burglary on November 13, a month before the murder.
After seeing items disappear from their flat, Jacqueline and Lizbeth called the police. Police linked the crime to Lizbeth’s murder. Romero may have stolen Lizbeth’s phone after the murder, shocking her boyfriend and friend. They received texts from Lizbeth’s number on her vigil day, indicating someone was using her phone. Stalking-like conduct concerned Jacqueline, who called it the tragedy’s “scariest part”.
