China recently eased Chinese visa requirements to help aid their tourism that hasn’t recovered much from the pandemic.
Laid Back Chinese Visa Requirements
China is making it easier for tourists from the United States to visit by relaxing Chinese visa requirements. This new policy for Chinese visa requirements will start from January 1, 2023, American tourists will no longer need to provide certain documents such as round-trip air tickets, hotel reservations, itineraries, or invitations to China.
This move of relaxing the Chinese visa requirements aims to encourage more people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. China has been struggling to revive its tourism sector after three years of strict pandemic measures, hence the new policy regarding Chinese visa requirements, and in the first half of 2023, foreign entries and exits decreased significantly compared to pre-pandemic levels.
To boost tourism, aside from the eased Chinese visa requirements, China also announced visa-free entry for citizens of several European countries and Malaysia. However, even with eased Chinese visa requirements, attracting American tourists may face challenges due to reduced international flights between the two countries.
According to a published article by NTD, aside from the relaxed Chinese visa requirements, there are also concerns about wrongful detentions and exit bans issued by the Chinese government, which had led the U.S. to recommend against traveling to China earlier this year.
Deteriorating Relations Between China And The US
In a published article by the Hindustan Times, this simplified application process aims to promote people-to-people exchanges between China and the United States. The ongoing low levels of international flights and deteriorating relations between China and the US may pose challenges to attracting American tourists. The US has recommended its citizens reconsider travel to China due to the risk of wrongful detentions and exit bans.
