Men’s mental health, an important part of well-being, is often overlooked. Even in the present period, social stigma prevents males from getting aid from loved ones and professionals.
Breaking the Silence: Men’s Mental Health Challenges and the Call for Open Conversations
Men tend to absorb their emotions and feelings silently due to social indoctrination, whereas women are more prone to seek help from others. Silence can expose males to mental health issues and ultimately to suicide.
Empower Pacific, a mental health and psychosocial support group, cites several causes of the suicide rise. Unemployment, stress, worry, and relationship troubles are major factors. Though not taboo, men’s mental health should be discussed more openly in communities and families.
Empower Pacific found that just 20% of mental health and psychosocial support service users are male, compared to 80% of females. This gap is due to men’s mental health stigma, according to Empower Pacific CEO Patrick Morgam. Men’s mental health stigma and prejudice can make them feel ashamed and helpless, preventing them from getting treatment.

Fighting Stigma: Empower Pacific Urges Open Conversations on Men’s Mental Health
Morgam says this stigma stems from society, traditions, and gender stereotypes. Men need a healthier mindset and secure locations to communicate their struggles without judgment to break these barriers. For meaningful change, males must be encouraged to acknowledge mental health issues and have access to mental health services. Awareness and comprehension of men’s mental health issues require advocacy.
Empower Pacific offers Vodafone and Digicel customers a 24/7 toll-free counseling helpline (5626). Given the rising number of males seeking help, the group stresses the significance of supporting them. It emphasizes the shared obligation to check on friends and family, especially those who may hide their troubles behind a smile, and encourages communities to promote mental health awareness and compassion.
