The mother of the man a former Aurora police officer killed pleaded to give him the harshest possible punishment.
Former Police Officer’s Charges
A former Aurora police officer, Randy Roedema, has been sentenced to 14 months in jail and four years probation for the killing of Elijah McClain. In October, the Aurora police officer was convicted by a jury of criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault related to the incident that occurred in August 2019.
The judge criticized the Aurora police officer’s indifference towards McClain’s suffering and highlighted his use of excessive force when McClain was not a threat. The Aurora police officer’s sentence will run concurrently with his probation, and he will be eligible for work release.
The Aurora police officer’s defense argued for probation, mentioning his lack of criminal history and military service. Still, McClain’s mother requested the maximum prison sentence for the former Aurora police officer.

Acquittal Of Two Other Officers
In a published article by The Guardian, two other officers were acquitted, and two paramedics involved in McClain’s death were convicted of criminally negligent homicide.
The incident occurred in August 2019 when McClain was stopped by police while walking home and ended with him being tackled, sedated, and suffering cardiac arrest. McClain’s pleas for help were caught on camera.
