China has a firm stance on the issue regarding Taiwan’s sovereignty during the military talk with the U.S.
Two Days Of Military Talk
China reiterated its firm stance on its sovereignty over Taiwan during two days’ worth of military talk with the United States in Washington. The military talk aimed to restore communication between the two countries’ militaries.
However, the military talk took place just before Taiwan’s presidential election which will impact its relationship with both China and the US. In line with the said military talk, China’s desire to reunify with Taiwan, even by force if necessary, remains a sensitive issue in US-China relations, which have experienced strained ties in recent years.
China emphasized during the military talk that it would not compromise or make any concessions on the Taiwan issue. During the military talk, China also demanded that the US adhere to the one-China principle, cease arming Taiwan, and refrain from supporting Taiwan’s independence.
According to a published article by NBC Connecticut, the military talk was the first of its kind since 2021. The military talk was also led by representatives from both countries’ defense departments.
South China Sea
In a published article by Al Jazeera, Beijing asserts a vast portion of the South China Sea under its “nine-dash line” claim, despite an international court ruling in 2016 that rejected its legal basis.
The rising tension in the South China Sea has driven countries like the Philippines closer to the US.
