Monthly Support for Needy Families

The Universal Income Program (UBI) passed by El Paso County offers monthly payments of $500 with no strings attached, resulting in a total annual support of $6,000 per qualifying family. The initiative is a part of a pilot program, and the county has been diligently working on its implementation for over a year.

County Commissioner David Stout sees the UBI program as a strategic investment with substantial returns. He believes the initiative will empower families to address their debts and build more stable savings accounts. According to Stout, the program has the potential to facilitate significant positive changes in the financial lives of beneficiaries, such as transitioning from renting houses to buying homes.

While eligibility criteria, application procedures, and additional details are still being formulated, it is emphasized that the program is specifically designed to benefit low-income families. Needy families will be the primary focus of this initiative, aligning with the broader goal of reducing poverty and fostering financial stability.
