A heart-wrenching farewell took place as hundreds gathered on Thursday to remember Ahmir ‘Smiley’ Jolliff, the vibrant 11-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in an Iowa school shooting. The funeral service, held at the First Christian Church, drew residents from the tight-knit community of Perry, Iowa, who came together to support the grieving family and pay their respects to a young soul described as having a “spirit bigger than his 11-year-old body could contain.”

A Vibrant Soul Remembered

Rev. Andrea Brownlee, leading the service, fondly remembered Ahmir as a boy with an exuberant spirit and boundless energy. “He had a vibrant soul. His catching smile and his endless energy are what most people have shared with me when sharing their thoughts about Ahmir,” said Brownlee. Ahmir’s refusal to stay in one place and his constant quest for adventure defined his short yet impactful life.

The horrific event happened on January 4 when a 17-year-old student entered the school carrying a revolver and a shotgun. He killed Ahmir and injured seven other people before taking his own life. The people of Perry, a tiny town, have come together to support one another as they deal with the fallout from this horrible act of violence.

Describing Ahmir as a person who brought his family together, Brownlee highlighted the boy’s courage in standing up for friends and taking a firm stance against bullying. “Ahmir was not just a bright light or a drink of joy; he was a firm defender of justice. He stood up against bullies, supporting those who needed a voice and ensuring that kindness always prevailed,” said Brownlee.

A Well-Loved Boy

In an earlier interview, Ahmir’s mother, Erica Jolliff, shared memories of her outgoing son, known for his extensive connections within Perry. “He was so well-loved, and he loved everyone,” she said.

The community continues to mourn Ahmir’s tragic loss, seeking solace in unity as they come to terms with the profound grief that has touched them all.
