Internal affairs involving China are at stake as the said country continues to oppose the involvement of countries such as the US and the UK in the new president of Taiwan.
China’s Internal Affairs
China has accused several countries of meddling with their internal affairs, including the US and the UK. China accused such countries of interfering in its internal affairs after world leaders sent messages of congratulations to Taiwan President-elect Lai Ching-te.
In line with the issue regarding their internal affairs, China claims Taiwan as its territory and considers it a breakaway province. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), led by Lai, has been accused by China of advocating for independence which may mess up with their internal affairs, although the DPP says it only supports the island’s self-governance.
Tensions have escalated as China strongly objected to the messages sent by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron, saying that their internal affairs have been interfered. The US and UK do not officially recognize Taiwan as an independent state but maintain unofficial ties amid the rising issues with China’s internal affairs.
According to a published article by Sky News, China has urged the US and UK to stop making such remarks and to refrain from official interactions with Taiwan to maintain their peaceful internal affairs.
Lai’s Vow
In a published article by BBC, Lai has vowed to protect Taiwan from China, however, China considers Taiwan its territory and challenges any government that contradicts this claim. China also views such support for Taiwan as supporting separatists.
