A coin made in the New Orleans Mint is expected to surely bag a good price due to its rarity.
New Orleans Mint’s Legendary Coin
A rare and legendary New Orleans Mint coin from 1838, known as the Cox Specimen, is expected to fetch a high price at auction. Only 20 of these coins were ever made, and they were created in the New Orleans Mint.
The New Orleans Mint coin features a woman’s face and an “O” stamp at the bottom, representing the city and mint. The New Orleans Mint coins were made from imported Latin American silver, but production was disrupted by a yellow fever outbreak and technical difficulties.
Currently, according to a published article by The U.S. Sun, there are eight known New Orleans Mint coins owned by different collectors. The price of each New Orleans Mint coin varies based on grade and appeal.
In 2014, the most expensive New Orleans Mint coin was sold for $763,750. Another valuable New Orleans Mint coin is the 1933 Indian Head Gold Eagle, once minted for $10 but now valued at around $600,000.
These New Orleans Mint coins feature a Native American and an eagle and have become rarer over time. Unlike the Cox specimen, they lack a mint mark.
1943 Wheat Penny
In a published article by 102.9 WMGK, a 1943 Wheat Penny was found in an old coin collection, and learned that it could be worth a lot of money. During World War 2, most pennies were made of steel, but some were accidentally made out of copper.
Only about 20-40 of these copper pennies exist, and they can be worth anywhere from $100,000 to $2 million.
