A scheduled visit is set to happen as a U.S. congressional delegation will be visiting Taiwan.
A Scheduled Visit By A U.S. Congressional Delegation
A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation is scheduled to visit Taiwan to show support for the island after the pro-sovereignty candidate, William Lai, was elected president. This will be the second U.S. congressional delegation to visit Taiwan since Lai’s election, which has been viewed negatively by Beijing.
U.S. lawmakers have become more skeptical of China, hence the congressional delegation visit, but there are still policy divisions between Republicans and Democrats regarding Taiwan, which could impact the possibility of war and economic consequences which is even more fueled by the scheduled congressional delegation visit.
Some believe that President Biden’s decision to send a congressional delegation to Taiwan is a political move to gain support from China-skeptic voters and that the congressional delegation visit may provoke Beijing and increase military tensions.
According to a published article by Semafor, Democrats and Republicans have diverged on China policy, with Democrats taking a more moderate stance, favoring selective economic ties with Beijing, while Republicans have become more hawkish.
Some congressional figures exaggerate China’s military capabilities while downplaying the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to address the Beijing threat. However, military economists estimate that China spends about 59% of what the U.S. does on defense, and its military technology is still inferior to that of the U.S.
Low-Key Visit
In a published article by CNBC, the visit is being kept low-key, as is typical for congressional visits to sensitive areas. This visit aligns with the Biden administration’s efforts to stabilize relations with China following tensions earlier this year.
