Johnson says the course’s unique challenge of shaping shots adds to its appeal. He started slowly, but a stunning run of birdies, including six consecutive ones, propelled him to a 7-under 29 on the front nine. Johnson added three more birdies on his final nine to his stellar opening round.

Noren’s ten birdies, eagle, and double bogey also stood out. Rico Hoey, familiar with Nicklaus Tournament Course, shot a bogey-free round at PGA West. Scott Stallings and Hayden Springer hit 64s at Pete Dye Stadium.

Johnson credits his excellent start to the season to his off-season cooperation with PXG. His steady iron shots in the middle of the face showed the benefits of collaboration.
