Bridge Michigan recently reported about the Michigan Republican Party plunging into chaos as a faction of Republicans sues to enforce the removal of Chair Kristina Karamo, while simultaneously selecting former U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra as her replacement. The struggle for leadership comes after a contentious vote by 50 state committee members and proxy delegates unveiling deep divides within the party ahead of crucial elections.
Party Infighting Escalates
Alleging a breach of contract, Karamo’s critics are seeking her removal, claiming she defied a 40-5 vote against her three weeks ago, causing confusion for GOP delegates. Hoekstra, victorious in a run-off against Lena Epstein, aims for national recognition to restore donor confidence.
Karamo, who labels the removal attempt as “illegal,” faces a legal battle amidst claims of defamation against the faction orchestrating the vote. The lawsuit raises concerns about the impact on the GOP’s planned presidential nominating caucus convention in March.
Hoekstra, prioritizing unity sees his victory as a chance to mend relationships with donors after Karamo’s tumultuous tenure and financial struggles within the party. He emphasizes the need for a viable alternative ahead of the 2024 elections.

Karamo’s Tenure Under Scrutiny
Karamo’s tenure as chair marked by financial difficulties and internal conflicts has led to a grassroots rebellion. Her aggressive fundraising plan faltered and a $500,000 loan inherited from predecessors remains unpaid.
While Karamo blames the “deep state” and “RINOs” for financial challenges, Hoekstra pledges to unite diverse Republican factions and attract outside investments to the Michigan GOP.
