Former President Trump edges closer to GOP nomination while Biden secures victory in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary

Donald Trump, the former President, made significant strides toward securing his third consecutive nomination for the Republican presidential candidacy by prevailing over former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley in the New Hampshire primary. Although the margin of victory was narrower than expected, Donald Trump secured 54.8% of the votes, with Nikki Haley receiving 43.2%.

In a speech following his win, Trump derided Haley and Governor Chris Sununu for their support of her, highlighting the significance of substantial margins in conveying unity within the GOP. Trump’s win was fortified by endorsements from influential figures like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, along with a robust ground campaign in New Hampshire.

In contrast, President Biden clinched victory in the Democratic primary despite not appearing on the ballot, relying on supporters to write in his name. With 87% of estimated votes tabulated, Biden secured 37.2% support, overshadowing his closest rival. Notably, the Democratic race saw a high percentage of unprocessed write-in votes expected to extend Biden’s lead beyond the 50% mark. This unconventional victory was a result of a calendar dispute between the Democratic National Committee and state officials, prompting Biden to make an impact through the “Write-in Biden” initiative.

Haley’s path forward appears challenging, as she is not registered for the upcoming Nevada caucus and trails significantly in South Carolina polling. Despite vowing to continue the race through Super Tuesday, her chances are uncertain.

Meanwhile, Biden’s victory in New Hampshire sets the stage for future Democratic primaries, with his absence from the ballot not hindering his success. The outcomes of both primaries will likely shape the trajectory of the respective presidential races, marking critical milestones for the ongoing 2024 election.
