The state will distribute these funds over five to six weeks to ensure efficiency. The checks are based on the difference between qualified residents’ 2022 tax refunds’ 6% working families tax credit and the 30% credit. The enhanced credit helps families financially, and the checks put money back in Michigan residents’ pockets.

Including the tax credit, these rebate checks will result in an average $3,150 tax refund for 2022, according to the state. Importantly, regular tax refunds for 2023 will reflect the improved 30% working families tax credit rate.

In December, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said, “By quintupling the working families tax credit, we’re putting an average of $550 back in the pockets of 700,000 Michigan families ahead of schedule.” She noted that the extra income may be used to pay bills, buy food, and buy school supplies, benefiting children and families.
