Medicaid Funding A Housing Support Program
The line between housing and healthcare is becoming blurred as housing support program is being introduced in some states. In certain states, Medicaid funds are being used to provide housing support program for low-income individuals.
While some see the housing support program as a way to improve health conditions stemming from poor living conditions, others argue that the housing support program implemented in some states will not address the underlying issues.
Regarding the housing support program in some states, each of them has flexibility in its Medicaid program, allowing it to set its benefits, eligibility requirements, etc. to be able to be part of that certain state’s housing support program.
According to a published article by Fox News, currently, at least 20 states offer housing support services under Medicaid, with five states (Arizona, California, New York, Oregon, and Washington) receiving federal approval to cover short-term housing support program and assistance through specific waivers.
California has announced an ambitious $12 billion, five-year plan to include housing support program in its Medicaid program. Oregon has submitted a proposal to offer six months of rent assistance through expanded Medicaid benefits.
Ambitious Healthcare Experiment
In a published article by CNN.com, states across the country are investing billions of dollars in an ambitious healthcare experiment by using public health insurance money to provide housing for the most vulnerable Americans. California is leading the way with a $12 billion Medicaid initiative to help homeless patients find housing and cover related expenses.
