In a prospective 2024 campaign, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) says that America “doesn’t want to see the idea of retribution” and supports a constructive approach from former President Trump. McCarthy’s remarks are related to worries about Trump’s rhetoric and the possibility of power abuses should he be reelected.
McCarthy’s Call for a Positive Campaign
During an appearance on “CBS News Sunday Morning,” McCarthy stressed how important it was for Trump’s campaign to focus on “rebuilding, restoring, and renewing America” instead of wanting revenge. As a way to stress the importance of a good message, he told Trump to avoid harsh words.
Robert Costa of CBS News raised concerns about Trump’s constant talk of revenge. McCarthy accepted the problems but said that there is a system of checks and balances, even within the Republican Party.
McCarthy said that America wants a campaign that is focused on rebuilding, and he told Trump that he should stop talking about payback if he wants to connect with more people.

Trump’s Controversial Statements
Some of Trump’s recent comments have raised eyebrows. For example, in a town hall with Fox News host Sean Hannity, he said he wanted to be a “dictator for one day” to deal with border problems and energy policies.
Speaking about being a “dictator for one day” has made people more worried that Trump might abuse his power if he gets another term. Critics say there is a trend of angry comments directed at people who are seen as enemies.
McCarthy, a strong supporter of Trump, accepted the worries but still backed Trump for the 2024 Grand Old Party (GOP) nomination, saying he was hopeful that the campaign would be focused on positive goals.
