A Decrease In New York City Homicide Rate
According to data from the NYPD, both New York City homicide rate and shootings decreased for the second consecutive year in 2023. In line with New York City homicide rate, the number of murder victims decreased by 11% from 2022, with 380 victims in 2023 compared to 429 the previous year.
Similar to the decrease in New York City homicide rate, there was a 24.3% drop in shootings, with 967 incidents in 2023 compared to 1,277 in 2022. Additionally, there were 405 fewer shooting victims in 2023, a decrease of 26.2% from the previous year.
After a spike in New York City homicide rate and gun violence in 2021 due to the pandemic, the mayor and former police commissioner implemented an anti-gun unit, resulting in a decrease in murder rates by 11% in 2022.
While robberies, burglary, and grand larceny decreased in 2023 compared to the prior year, felony assault and grand larceny increased.
According to a published article by The Herald, felony assault incidents rose by 6%, with 27,299 incidents in 2023 compared to 25,745 in 2022. Grand larceny increased by 15%, potentially due to thefts targeting catalytic converters.
Notably, aside from the decrease in New York City homicide rate, crime rates in the subway system decreased by 2%, and there was a significant decrease in underground rapes, with only four victims in 2023 compared to 12 in 2022.
A Decrease In Reported Rape Cases And Fatal Shootings
In a published article by Gothamist, reported rapes decreased by 11%, although experts believe that police data does not capture the true extent of assault cases. Fatal shootings decreased by 19%, non-fatal shootings dropped by 26%, and there were 30% fewer shooting victims in comparison to the previous year.
The NYPD has focused on a group of 1,000 individuals believed to be involved in most shootings and has been sharing more data with district attorneys to facilitate prosecutions.
