Party crashers argued at the Embassy Suites hotel on Military Road NW, prompting a gunshot. He was shot and killed in a seventh-floor room.

The incident led to the arrest of 18-year-old Northeast Washington resident Jelani Cousin for second-degree murder. This was the District’s first homicide of the year after 274 in 2023, the city’s biggest annual toll in 25 years.
Reverend Kenneth Thomas Sr. called Hinds “the sweetest thing this side of heaven” with big goals. The senseless assault that killed her devastated her family. Police say the shooter did not target Hinds.
D.C. was debating growing crime rates when the incident occurred. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith and Mayor Muriel E. Bowser want more aggressive policing, prosecutions, and detentions. Some political figures have called for a reevaluation of public safety and justice systems.

The tragedy has increased calls to solve the city’s gun violence pandemic. Council member Matthew Frumin called a public safety community meeting with Chief Smith on January 17 to explore the matter. A mourning family and community leaders demand responsibility and effective crime prevention to protect the city’s youngsters.
Reverend Thomas stressed the urgency of this problem and called for tougher actions and responsibility. Ashlei Hinds’ tragic death highlights the difficulties communities and law enforcement have in protecting the public and preventing unnecessary violence.
