League of Women Voters of Nebraska Voices Support for Planned Parenthood in Legal Challenge

The League of Women Voters of Nebraska, which promotes informed and active government involvement, has spoken out in a landmark abortion and transgender kid gender-affirming surgery case. The League filed an amicus brief in favor of Planned Parenthood’s case with the Nebraska Supreme Court.

The League of Women Voters of Nebraska received authorization to file the Planned Parenthood amicus brief in December. The group claims LB574 did not uphold the legislative single-subject norm under Nebraska Constitution Article III, section 14. LWVNE attorney Beth Neitzel argued that LB574 ignored the rule’s essence and importance for democracy, and the League wants the court to overturn the trial court’s judgment and uphold the single-subject rule.

The ACLU of Nebraska has previously argued that the Nebraska Legislature violated the single-subject rule of the State Constitution by merging unrelated provisions into one bill. In Lancaster County District Court, their case failed. The ACLU claimed that the Legislature violated the single-subject rule by including two unrelated issues in one bill. LB574, a contentious bill, restricted abortion and transgender kid’s gender-affirming operations.

To answer these crucial concerns and shape LB574 and associated legislation, the Nebraska Supreme Court must rule.

The League of Women Voters of Nebraska filed an amicus brief to safeguard Planned Parenthood and transgender adolescents by emphasizing legal scrutiny and constitutionality in legislation. The League’s timely participation highlights the case’s severity and its repercussions, highlighting Nebraska’s law, democracy, and social challenges.
