Wounded U.S. Soldier from Christmas Day Drone Attack Undergoes Brain Surgery, Wife Awaits Possible Transfer

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Garrett Illerbrunn, one of three American soldiers injured in a Christmas Day drone attack at Irbil Air Base in Iraq, is set to undergo brain surgery in Homburg, Germany, this week. The surgery aims to assess if he can be medically cleared for transport to the U.S. Illerbrunn, initially unnamed but described as being in critical condition, has been in a coma and recently transferred from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to Homburg. His wife, Lorna, an Army veteran, arrived in Germany on Dec. 29 and has been by his side during his treatment.

Drone Attack Survivor’s Struggle

Lorna Illerbrunn shared details of her husband’s injuries, stating that he was hit by shrapnel while attempting to reach a bunker during the December 25 drone attack. The attack, claimed by the Iran-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah, resulted in over 115 rocket and drone strikes against U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria since the Israel-Hamas war in October. Despite the severity of Garrett Illerbrunn’s condition, his wife remains hopeful and emotionally supports him through reading books and writing daily letters.

The Illerbrunns, who met while deployed in Afghanistan, share a unique military connection. Garrett, an Army pilot, and Lorna, an Army medevac pilot, connected during their service. Their journey, marked by resilience and persistence, is evident in Garrett’s upbringing on a North Dakota wheat farm and his determination to enter flight school.

Lorna expresses gratitude for the outpouring of support from the global community, with a fundraising effort surpassing $110,000 and messages of encouragement coming from around the world.
