A leading consumer advocacy group has issued its support for a piece of Congressional legislation that aims to bolster the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by increasing federal funding and improving access to healthier foods for SNAP recipients.

Proposed SNAP Bill For Food Stamp $3.5 Billion Fund Increases
Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a leading consumer advocacy group has issued it’s support in Congressional legislation that aims to support the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by increasing its federal funds and improving access to much more healthier foods for those SNAP beneficiaries.
Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) released a statement last June 16 that they put back the “Opt for Health with SNAP Act of 2023,” or “OH SNAP” for short. According to them, this proposed bill would strengthen the U.S. government’s Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) by increasing the funds over $3.5 billion for the next five (5) years.
CSPI President Dr. Peter G. Lurie said in the statement that some of the Americans consume the recommended amount of groceries like fruits and vegetables and also those shoppers who are using SNAP remain a significant barriers to them. According to him, GusNIP improves access to fruits and vegetables for shoppers who are using SNAP by providing a financial assistance for them.

SNAP is formerly known as food stamps, it is a food purchasing program for those household who has low income. The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program was first authorized way back in 2018 and they allow the Secretary of Agriculture to support projects that gives low-income household some assistance to buy more fruits and vegetables. They help to improve more in health and nutrition and facilitate growth in states.
Lawmakers backing up the OH SNAP bill include the support of Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) and CSPI wants the Congress to include “OH SNAP” in 2023 Farm Bill.
