As reported by McDowell News, Dogwood Health Trust Invests $6.6 Million In The County
The Dogwood Health Trust made a total investment of $6.6 million in McDowell County in 2022. Included in this amount are $2.67 million in grants made to 12 different nonprofits based in McDowell.
The Dogwood Health Trust just published its 2022 annual report. A PDF copy of the whole 2022 study is now offered in the report’s digital form. Just last year, Dogwood Health Trust invested more than $81 million in community investments in total.
Dogwood Health Trust’s goal is to significantly improve the health and welfare of all individuals and communities within the western North Carolina region and Qualla Boundary.

Investments Of Dogwood Health Trust, According To City News
In 2022, Dogwood Health Trust made contributions worth $5.4 million in impact investments, $73 million in regular grant payments, and close to $800,000 in grant writing and capacity-building assistance. Additionally, Dogwood also established a new strategy for grantmaking that included rolling applications for further opportunities in addition to two grant cycles for its four strategic priority areas of housing, education, economic opportunity, and health & wellness. According to the news release, the new strategy helps to clear timelines so that partners can plan better and prepare for applications.
The remaining balance from the $6.6 million handed to McDowell was distributed as grants to institutions and organizations based in other counties. For instance, the Buncombe-based Givens Estates received a $3 million grant from Dogwood Health Trust to acquire the former Clinchfield Manufacturing facility in Marion for affordable housing.
Aside from providing funding to McDowell, Dogwood Health Trust presented five reports last year and sponsored webinars with research specialists to discuss these reports with the community. According to the news release, more than 475 people attended these presentations, and each report sparked subsequent discussions among organizations all around the area.
