The Commanders are adjusting to life without Washington commanders owner Daniel Snyder, whose leadership was responsible for the team’s status as one of sports’ most reviled organizations.
According to SI, after the Washington Commanders owner Snyder officially sold the team on July 21, there have been discussions about the franchise’s future without the Commander’s moniker.
However, some groups have used this opportunity to push for the reinstatement of Washington’s previous moniker, a racial slur directed at Native Americans. Josh Harris, the new Washington Commanders Owner, has responded by firmly opposing the name’s return.

I grew up in Washington, D.C. I know why fans adore the former name because I was there during the heyday.
However, as Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post reported, “There was a segment of our fan base that felt disrespected by the former name,” Harris said on Friday. “Sports should not be a source of disunity; they should bring people together. I want no interruptions. We should end the conversation, in my opinion.
Before the 2020 season, the team dropped its previous moniker, going by the Washington Football Team for seasons 2020 and 21. Before the 2022 season, when it went 8-8-1 and finished last in the NFC East, the team once more changed its name to the Commanders.
