Stephen Smerk, a 51-year-old New York man , has confessed to the 1994 murder of Robin Lawrence, a Virginia mother.
The New York man was identified through DNA test with the Parabon Company.
The New York man Lawrence was brutally stabbed multiple times in her home while her 2-year-old daughter was present.
The New York man was said to be an active-duty military personnel at the time of the murder. After confessing to the crime, the New York man was charged with second-degree murder and is awaiting extradition to Virginia.
Lawrence’s family is grateful for the justice and closure the arrest of the New York man brings after nearly three decades.

The 1994 cold case murder of the Virginia mother was solved using genetic genealogy analysis.
ABC News reports that the New York man had no previous criminal record. The New York man was said to have no apparent connection to the victim.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis expressed confidence in a strong case against the New York man, stating that the evidence they have against the New York man is overwhelming.
Chief Davis stated that the New York man, who was working as a software engineer described his involvement in the case and that the New York man talked about killing Robin, ABC News added.
