The Jersey City Rent Leveling Board’s New Ruling

The Jersey City Rent Leveling Board ruled at a meeting last night that the two Portside Towers buildings are subject to rent control. This new ruling by the Jersey City Rent Leveling Board is due to the year’s worth of complaints and a hearing in June.

The Jersey City Rent Leveling Board unanimously voted not to consider letters submitted as evidence. The Jersey City Rent Leveling Board describes precedents set in Hoboken and Woodbridge that ruled in favor of rent control.

According to the Jersey City Rent Leveling Board, the Portside Towers tenants alleged that they were subjected to unreasonable rent increases that violated rent control laws. The Jersey City Rent Leveling Board found that the notice requirement at one of the buildings had not been met and that the exemption from rent control had not been fulfilled.

According to a published article by Hudson County View, the motion to side with the tenants was passed unanimously by the Jersey City Rent Leveling Board. Portside Towers tenants have been protesting at the Jersey City Rent Leveling Board for almost a year, demanding action and criticizing the mayor and city council for their perceived inaction.

Hoboken Rent Board

In a published article by Patch, the Hoboken Rent Board has ruled that Avalon Hoboken, a luxury building in Hoboken, must keep rent increases to around 5 percent after previously issuing increases of sometimes over 30 percent.
