A 28-year-old Louisiana woman posed as a 17-year-old teenager and enrolled in high school, stating that she wanted to learn English, according to the police.

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office in a news release, the 28-year-old Martha Jessenia Gutierrez–Serrano enrolled in Hahnville High School as a 17-year-old teenager, in June 2022 and has been able to attend the entire school year of 2022-2023.
According to the news release, school authorities told the sheriff’s office in May that they had received information that a student registered as 17 was actually an adult in her mid-20s.
Police discovered Gutierrez-Serrano and her mother, Marta Elizeth Serrano-Alvarado, 46, used a forged passport and birth certificate to enroll the 28-year-old Gutierrez-Serrano in high school, according to CNN News.

“The young woman wanted to become proficient in English and perhaps further her education, which I think we can all sympathize with,” said St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne. “She was in school; she minded her own business; she did her schoolwork. She caused no trouble; she was not a disciplinary problem,” Champagne said during a news conference on Wednesday.
Gutierrez-Serrano and her mother, Martha Elizeth, are both charged with one count each of tampering with public documents, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office in a press release.
