A man hospitalized with severe injuries after what authorities called “altercations and an escape attempt” at the New Mexico county jail, has been taken off life support and died, officials said.

The 34-year-old John Sanchez was reported dead at the University of New Mexico Hospital after taking off his life support on Friday and the sheriff’s office is still investigating his death, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputy Angelina Navarro told the Albuquerque Journal.
Deputy Navarro stated that Sanchez has been injured at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque days earlier, according to The Seattle Times.
According to the Journal report on court records, Sanchez had been arrested on June 8 after police claimed that he was found riding an SUV that had been reported to be stolen.

The auto theft charge placed on Sanchez was dismissed by prosecutors on June 9 due to “insufficient evidence,” and he was due to be released on Monday — the same day he was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, the newspaper said.
Three jail officers have been placed on administrative leave until the result of the investigation into Sanchez’s injuries and death, jail spokesperson Candace Hopkins told the newspaper, according to CBS News.
Benny Jaramillo, Sanchez’s father, told KOB-TV that he firmly believes one or more people fatally beat his son while at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
“It’s sad. It’s heartbreaking. You don’t expect your kid to get injured or die in a place where they’re supposed to be taking care of him,” Jaramillo told the station.
