Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, along with his wife, are currently contesting for a lower property tax bill in their East Dallas home.
Dallas Mayor Petitions For A Lower Property Tax Bill On Their Home
According to the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson and his wife are contesting the home’s appraised value in an effort to pay for a lower property tax bill. The couple would have to pay an estimated $33,000 in taxes on their 5,000-square-foot home in East Dallas’ White Rock Lake neighborhood, which was valued at close to $1.6 million. The city would receive around 28% of this sum. Since 2012, The Johnsons have contested their valuation for a lower property tax bill each passing year, the source claims, using public data.
Mayor Johnson has been open about his intention to lower the property tax bill in Dallas, given that the city already has the highest property tax rate among the cities within Texas. He stressed that the school district, not the city, normally receives the majority of property taxes in an April 2021 newsletter.

City Council Members In Favor Of The Mayor’s Plight To Lower Property Tax Bill
The mayor’s efforts to lower the property tax bill in the city are in line with ongoing state-level negotiations. Texas legislators are now debating a reduction package for property tax bills as part of a special legislative session. The distribution of about $17.6 billion in excess tax income to be used to cut local school rates has been a point of contention between the State House and Senate.
Chad West and Jaime Resendez are two other Dallas City Council members who are in favor of the Mayor’s plight to lower the city’s property tax bill. Resendez advised property owners to question their appraisals if they believe they are being overcharged. Critics dispute that it would be difficult to significantly reduce the property tax bill of the city in the absence of a state income tax.
