Birmingham Firefighters Shot While On Duty

Two Birmingham firefighters were shot and critically injured while doing their duties at a fire station on Wednesday morning, in what the city’s police chief believes may have been a “targeted” attack. Following the shooting at Station 9 at around 8:30 a.m., the Birmingham firefighters were taken to the hospital, Police Chief Scott Thurmond announced at a news conference on Wednesday. He said that a third firefighter was inside the station and was working unharmed.

The two Birmingham firefighters were identified as Jamel Jones and Jordan Melton, according to Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. According to the fire department, Melton was in critical condition and Jones was in severe condition at UAB Hospital as of last Wednesday night. Thurmond said it was unknown how many people were involved and that no arrests had been made.

Birmingham Firefighters Under Attack?

Birmingham firefighters being targeted was described as “extremely troubling” by the fire chief. Thurmond stated, “At this moment, we believe it may be a targeted strike. It’s quite rare for someone to come target one of our fire stations, but that’s one of the things we’re trying to figure out at this point in time.

The rear entrance was likely accessible for the public since the firemen had likely just changed shifts, according to the fire chief, as reported by the CBS station WIAT-TV.
